I feel the flight part.

I like the sine lead for this as a song, but it does detract from the old school feel a little. The based seemed a bit loud as well.

Old School!

This is one of the few tunes in the competition that's actually old school. I could totally see this in an old fast paced platform shooter. Not particularly spacey, but none of those tunes really were, right?

Sort of spacey.

But I'd rather listen to the track from Super Pitfall. The clipping sounds you used are far from pleasing to the ears. I could see past that a little if there was a tune, but I didn't hear one. Sorry.

Calamaistr responds:

clipping sounds? what?
no tune? what?

what?

So easy you don't even know it's there.

This piece knows what it's on about. A great background track, and it still has enough running through it to make for a good listen. This would do wonders for a game that suffers from slow mechanics.

Not what I'd call old school or retro, but nice and spacey. I'm seeing asteroids slowly drifting by out of the window of my spacecraft. Not the most convincing as a loop either. The beginning and the end are definitely noticeable.

You definitely nailed the space part.

This is a great background track, but as a tune itself it doesn't seem to have much carrying it along. Also, this isn't old school or even retro to me. Very well edited though.

RyeGuyHead responds:

I tossed the melody around to a bunch of instruments, which messes with the fluidity of the piece.

I have limited experience with retro gaming...

Well titled.

I love how dramatic it is. You definitely hit the mark on an exploratory tune. Loved the smooth tempo changes as well. Wouldn't call old school, but it's definitely got the retro feel. This would go great in a movie tribute to an old school game like Lode Runner or Metroid but, it demands too much of the listener for good background music. Great job!

Well done, sir!

For some reason this reminds me of gypsy music, and I love gypsy music. I'd have to say it misses the "old school video game" mark for me. It definitely has the retro feel, but it seems to demand too much of my attention and it's a bit too smooth. Those are wonderful qualities as a song though! I'd love to see a looped version in a Flixel space action game.

megakill responds:

Gypsy music? I dont even know what thats supposed to sound like, but if you like it then its all good.
Yeah you're right though, it doesnt quite fit the theme. I had a lot of trouble with this theme but oh well.
And im sure i could upload this as a loop or someone could edit it lol.
Thanks for the input mate, good luck in the contest!

Great work.

I'm not a big fan of baroque, but this is just wonderful. I'm really looking forward to the "whole thing", but this is close enough to perfection as it is in my opinion.

Well named.

I love thin pieces. I get every in this out while I'm listening. The growth of the piece is great as well. It's almost like an escape from reality for five minutes. It's a shame it crackles at a few points, such as around 4:08.

TreborLocke responds:

Balancing and equalizing this has been very hard. I've actually recorded this about 50 times using different instruments and everything...hard to get it to balance right.

This is beautiful.

Why don't you do variations on this?

TreborLocke responds:

This was an assignment for a composition class. Don't really wish to expand on it.
