A little harsh at points.

It definitely has the old school feel, but this reminds me more of one of those tunes that would make me turn off the sound and play something else on the stereo. It's just too discordant at times for me, and I feel like the different lines aren't working well together at points. Also, not particularly spacey but the tunes from that era's space games sound like this, not spacey. I do love the end.

PainasaurusRex responds:

While I accept that it's harsh, it's how they sounded back in the day... especially if their sounds were square heavy, which mine are. Also, it's suppose to sound like the retro space games, not necessarily spacey... Just saying. Though I can tell by the rating you didn't hate it, so I accept your criticism and will work on making it less harsh and make it work together better in the future. Thank you for taking the time. It really means a lot to me.

Sort of spacey.

But I'd rather listen to the track from Super Pitfall. The clipping sounds you used are far from pleasing to the ears. I could see past that a little if there was a tune, but I didn't hear one. Sorry.

Calamaistr responds:

clipping sounds? what?
no tune? what?

what?

You definitely nailed the space part.

This is a great background track, but as a tune itself it doesn't seem to have much carrying it along. Also, this isn't old school or even retro to me. Very well edited though.

RyeGuyHead responds:

I tossed the melody around to a bunch of instruments, which messes with the fluidity of the piece.

I have limited experience with retro gaming...

Well done, sir!

For some reason this reminds me of gypsy music, and I love gypsy music. I'd have to say it misses the "old school video game" mark for me. It definitely has the retro feel, but it seems to demand too much of my attention and it's a bit too smooth. Those are wonderful qualities as a song though! I'd love to see a looped version in a Flixel space action game.

megakill responds:

Gypsy music? I dont even know what thats supposed to sound like, but if you like it then its all good.
Yeah you're right though, it doesnt quite fit the theme. I had a lot of trouble with this theme but oh well.
And im sure i could upload this as a loop or someone could edit it lol.
Thanks for the input mate, good luck in the contest!

Well named.

I love thin pieces. I get every in this out while I'm listening. The growth of the piece is great as well. It's almost like an escape from reality for five minutes. It's a shame it crackles at a few points, such as around 4:08.

TreborLocke responds:

Balancing and equalizing this has been very hard. I've actually recorded this about 50 times using different instruments and everything...hard to get it to balance right.

This is beautiful.

Why don't you do variations on this?

TreborLocke responds:

This was an assignment for a composition class. Don't really wish to expand on it.

To sum it up, Winston, two plus two can equal five

I love simple music. Most new music is just too clustered. You pulled this one off perfectly. Sometimes, if you leave things simple enough, the whole becomes greater than the sum of the parts. I listened to the winners in the Halloween Competition in genres I'd dare to listen to, and this one tops them all in my opinion. But then, my tastes don't reflect those of the average Newgrounds user.

AudioVision responds:

I WISH your views were that of the average Newgrounds user... I could have used a freakin' hundred bucks. :D
